The Tutu is used in French Polynesia for body care. Soap and shampoo can be made using its leaves, and sometimes its bark. Some recipes based on this plant are also prepared to treat skin problems. In Tetiaroa, according J.F. Butaud (report: DIREN 2013), it is present on the large motu and is considered a species introduced by the Polynesians, just like on the majority of the Polynesian Atolls. On high islands, on the other hand, it is classified as an native species.
