This fish is present up to 65 feet (20 m) deep in the lagoon and along sheltered reefs near passes and in hoa. The Fringelip mullet stays immobile facing the current, sometimes in estuaries. They often form schools and eat phytoplankton, algae, organic detritus, small worms, and sometimes crustaceans. Tehu is recognizable thanks to its silver body and olive green back along with pectoral fins that are yellow with black base and its forked tail.
