This butterflyfish is found alone or in couples and generally lives in the coral reefs on the outer reef up to 200 feet deep. It is distinguishable with its yellow-brown body with two large black bands that cross its front and back. It has a black and white “mask” from where it gets its name “raccoon”. It is an omnivore and can eat gastropods, mollusk eggs, polychaetes, hydroids, and hard coral.
