The Peacock grouper is easily recognizable thanks to its light brown color and its electric blue spots. Adults sometimes have vertical bands on the posterior of its body. They eat small fish and sometimes crustaceans. It is not very shy and sometimes shares its shelter. This fish is a protogynous hermaphrodite (female to male transformation). Generally several females will group around a single male during reproduction where there is a clear hierarchy based on the size of each individual’s territory. Its meat, though often contaminated by ciguatera, is very prized.
