Tetiaroa comes from “te ti’a roa,” where “ti’a” means to stand upright and “roa” means great. The name can be understood as “the one who stands tall,” evoking dignity, resilience, and the majestic presence of the place. It also conveys an image of nobility and strength, and can be interpreted as “the one who remains dignified,” a poetic meaning that reflects the spirit of the atoll and its cultural significance. The pronunciation of Tetiaroa is “Teh-tee-ah-ro-ah,” a soft and fluid sound true to its Polynesian origins. The atoll is also closely connected to Marlon Brando, who found deep inspiration there and dedicated himself to preserving its natural, cultural, and spiritual heritage for future generations.
