About this species
The body varies from light to darker brown and is covered with vivid blue spots. Adults may also show vertical bands towards the rear. This grouper is relatively approachable and sometimes shares its shelter. It eats small fish and, occasionally, crustaceans.
Peacock groupers can change from female to male. During reproduction, several females may associate with one male; the size of each female’s territory helps shape the group’s hierarchy. Its flesh is prized, but the species is associated with ciguatera poisoning.
