About this species

The rounded grey-brown body carries broad white bands towards the front and scattered white spots farther back. Yellow pelvic fins and a black-and-yellow tail complete the pattern.

It favours rocky, wave-washed reef margins and channels beside the barrier reef. Filamentous and calcareous algae form its diet. During reproduction, gatherings can grow to several hundred fish.

Api eat filamentous algae and calcareous algae.
