About this species

Research published in 2014 recorded a Cuvier’s beaked whale diving to 2,992 m, a mammalian depth record at the time. The measurements came from whales tagged off California, not from Tetiaroa. It reveals the depths this elusive whale can reach.

The guide describes groups of two to five animals, commonly one or two males with several females and sometimes their young. It records the species in all five archipelagos of French Polynesia. These are regional observations; the source does not document a resident population at Tetiaroa.
