Its narrow, hooked beak reaches into crevices in the reef.

About this species

The hawksbill lives in warm seas. Its pointed, beak-like mouth helps it reach food in reef crevices; sponges form an important part of its diet in many areas.

The original Tetiaroa guide mentions one hawksbill nesting record in the Tuamotu, described at the time as recent. It provides no date and does not report a nest at Tetiaroa. That record should be understood as historical regional information, rather than a current count of all nesting in French Polynesia.
